In honor of The Band’s Levon Helm, who died Thursday at the age of 71, here’s the song Elton John and Bernie Taupin named after him. “What I’m most proud of is he called me his partner,” said Larry Campbell, Helm’s longtime musical partner. “For me to arrive at a place in my career like that with a great man like him is the ultimate.”

Dick Clark should be given a great deal of credit. He had a lot of black artists on Bandstand and introduced many white Americans to black music, the significance of which can’t be overstated.

Many of the statements in this paper are also noted as coming from a person only identified as ‘Ibid’ in the footnotes. I am not skeptical of Ibid’s view, but I would like to find his/her article and read it for myself.

Kittens to Form Beatles Cover Band
Though there was some initial squabbling over who would get to be John, a group of four talented kitties from Grand Rapids, MI are set to form a Beatles tribute band. The cats, who are all British ex-pats, met over a pint at a local pub. After having a few too many, so the story goes, they broke out into a chorus of Strawberry Fields Forever. The bartender jokingly said they should perform for an audience and the rest is history.
Their first gig will be next week.

Shaima Alawadi, a 32-year-old Iraqi woman living in Southern California, was taken off life support today, succumbing to injuries sustained in a brutal tire iron beating on Wednesday. Shaima was found in her living room, and according to her daughter Fatima and the police investigating, a note was found near her saying “Go back to your country, you terrorist.”
Shaima was a mother of five who has been in the US with her family since the mid-1990s. She was described by her friend Sura Alzaidy as “respectful modest muhajiba.” Her daughter tearfully addressed her mother’s attackers during a media interview, saying “You took my mother away from me. You took my best friend away from me. Why? Why did you do it?”
